Fun and FAITH: Showing, Telling, Both?

Standard

Every Friday, it happened.

Show and Tell. It was the highlight of my kindergarten experience. I labored through the week trying to decide what item to take to school when it was my turn to address our class.

I relished the moments when I had everyone’s attention and when they listened to me explain what I had brought and what I had to tell them about it. Then I sat down. And it was over. Until next time.

As I grew, I remember times when I’d tell someone I loved them. The response: show me don’t tell me. How rude, I thought. But after my initial response I realized that words are cheap and easy to come by and the demonstration of love can sometimes outweigh those words by supporting what you mouth says.

And then as I drove to school this week, I thought about how much I love my middle school students but how much more God loves them and me.

Not only does He SHOW us. He TELLS us.

 Let me explain.

For example as expressions of our love for others – especially around Valentine’s Day:

  • We may give flowers. He gives FAITH to believe and the ability to follow him. Hebrews 11:1.
  • We may give cards featuring super sentiments. He gives us sunrises and Scripture.
  •  We may give chocolates. He gives us communion – symbolically as in the Lord’s Supper and practically as in daily availability and access to Him.

Our flowers, our sentiments and our chocolates are sweet. It’s never wrong to express your love and appreciation to others.

Yet once again, God goes beyond – creating the flowers, the cocoa beans and communication.

My best friend shows her love to me with yummies.

If ever you wonder whether or not you’re loved, I hope this Valentine’s Day will remind you that God shows AND tells of His love for you.

You might find the following Bible verses interesting!

From the Old Testament (first part of the Bible.)

His faithfulness knows no season. Isaiah 55:11

He loves you with an everlasting love. Psalm 13:5

From the New Testament (second part of the Bible.)

He knows you by name. John 10:3

He knows your needs. Matthew 6:8

His advice is prefect and consistent. Hebrews 13:8.

His advice is wise, truthful and loving. James 1:15

My message to you this Valentine’s Day: Don’t settle for showing OR telling. Accept God’s showing AND telling of His love for YOU!!

Just wondering: How has God shown you His love recently? Let me know!

    • Rendy: Now I need an article on best friends and we’ll put a picture of us together through the years! I wonder if there is an international friendship day or something. Thank you for reading the blog! – Cheryl
